STAND UP AND TAKE ACTION: 16 – 18 October 2009!!!

 The fourth annual “Stand Up, Take Action, End Poverty Now!” mobilization is taking place from 16 – 18 October this year. The mobilization campaign is held in many countries around the world annually over three days, one of which usually coincides with the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on October 16. The campaign is about a worldwide call to all sectors of society to get involved, mobilize, and show commitment and support for ending poverty and inequality and to achieving and exceeding the MDGs. To this end, various events are organized where people literally Stand Up and Take a variety of Action to demand their governments to deliver on their commitment to end poverty.

In 2008, 116 million people took part in the campaign across the globe. Under the theme “Kick Out Poverty!” this year’s mobilisation is expected to draw the participation of millions more around the world.

 This year, particular thematic focus will be on MDGs that have recorded the least progress, among which women’s empowerment and the promise to reduce maternal mortality by three-quarters by the 2015.

Stand Up and Take Action 2009

The United Cities and Local Government of Africa (UCLGA) works in partnership with the United Nations Millennium Campaign (UNMC) to inform, inspire and encourage people’s involvement and action, with specific emphasis on local governments, for the realization of the MDGs.

 Through this project, the UCLGA addresses the MDGs agenda in several ways:

a)      Through increasing awareness of the MDG programme among local governments and local communities in order to increase demand articulation;

b)    Through advocacy work, promote inclusive governance at the local level; and

c)      Improve local governments planning capacity for addressing MDGs through information dissemination and training

The ultimate goal of the UCLGA MDGs project is to reduce poverty through improving demand articulation and better planning for development with local government a key hub fur such initiatives.

It is in the above context that the UCLGA is collaborating with the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and the Southern Africa Youth Movement (SAYM) on hosting a Stand Up and Take Action event in Ivory Park, Tembisa, South Africa on Saturday, 17 October 2009 from 2:30pm. The event will feature poverty hearing, signing of pledge forms, musical and cultural performance and a running competition, among other things.

UCLGA members and partners are urged to massively and actively participate in Stand Up and Take Action events taking place in their respective locations from 16 – 18 this month.
