UCLGA inaugurates its North Africa Office in Algiers, December 2009

In pursuit of the UCLGA’s goal to establish a regional office in each of the five regions of Africa as defined by the African Union, the president of the UCLGA, Father Smangaliso Mkhatshwa officially opened the North Africa office in Algiers on 14 December 2009.

The North Africa office is led by the UCLGA vice president for North Africa, Mayor of Algiers, Mr Tayeb Zitouni.

The occasion was marked by celebrations with local cultural groups providing music and performing traditional dances.

The UCLGA aspires to ensure that the implementation of its programmes is decentralised to regions. The  regional office, situated at Mohamed VI Boulevard in Algiers,    will be responsible for achieving this goal and mobilising members to address generic challenges facing local governments in the region. The office will also coordinate sharing of information and knowledge among local governments in the region.
