COP 15 UNFCCC Copenhagen 2009 – Update from ICLEI!!!

With the UNFCCC COP 15 less than two months away, and following the African Local Government Climate Roadmap Summit in Pretoria, ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability would hereby like to share some important updates on the planning and development towards COP15, especially regarding the Local Government Climate Roadmap (www.iclei.org/climate-roadmap). The nomination form for local governments, which can be used to nominate for the attendance of your local government at the COP 15, should be noted, in particular. 

The Local Government Climate Roadmap is a parallel process to the United Nations Climate Roadmap and focuses on strengthening both National-Local Partnerships whilst also focusing on the strategic importance of the inclusion of Cities and Local Governments in a post-2012 Climate Agreement, and is coordinated by ICLEI and the United Cities Local Government (UCLG) globally. In Africa, the process is being coordinated by ICLEI’s Africa Secretariat in partnership with the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLGA)   

ICLEI is also coordinating The Local Government Climate LOUNGE - a meeting space located in the COP 15 building in Copenhagen, at the heart of the groundbreaking negotiations. Thus, Local Governments and their associations will have a unique advocacy base during the UN Climate negotiations for dialogue and interaction with their national government, with other national governments, with other local governments, NGOs and the international press.   

 A special feature to look forward to in the Local Government Climate LOUNGE is the “Africa Day” on 7 December 2009. This high level event will serve as an opportunity for Local Governments from Africa to share lessons learned in the field of Climate Change, to meet with their national delegations and to network with various NGO’s, media representatives and development agencies. The deadline for nominations to register for COP15, through the ICLEI accreditation process, is 31 October 2009. The deadline for E-posters and Local Stories is 31 October as well.
