BALA Women’s Commission Orientation Workshop Kasane, Botswana: 29 - 30 April 2009

Following a resolution made by the UCLGA Women’s Commission at the 1st Ordinary Congress of the UCLGA in Accra, Ghana in July 2008 that Women’s Commissions should be established in all member National Associations of Local Government in the continent in a bid to advance issues of women’s representation in local government, the Botswana Association of Local Authorities (BALA) launched its Women’s Commission in Gaborone in December 2008.

The UCLGA Women’s Commission will be holding an induction / orientation workshop for the newly-elected BALA Women’s Commission on the 29-30 April 2009, in Kasane, Botswana.

The workshop is aimed at:

  • Providing the women commissioners with a platform to define their roles and responsibilities in ensuring effective and efficient service delivery, as well as their contribution to engendering local government budgets;

  • Getting a good understanding of the mandate, aims, objectives and operational structures of the UCLGA and its Women’s Commission, as well as defining a clear relationship with them;

  • Facilitating a comprehensive session on key gender concepts, to create a deeper understanding of the gender divide, that mitigate against women’s full participation, representation and enrolment in decision-making processes;

  • Building and strengthening the capacity of the Commissioners to campaign, lobby and advocate for increased representation in local government.

The expected outcome is the development and roll out of a Road Map which includes a clear plan of action, which will involve lobbying and advocacy as a build up to the September 2009 local government elections (short-term) and development of future interventions to lobby and advocate for increased representation of women in local government in Botswana.

The induction/orientation workshop is funded by the UCLGA and will be facilitated by a gender expert from Botswana.
